Poor picture of traffic

Added At: 2010-07-18

KATHMANDU: Footpath vendors blocking the pavements, an overload of passengers on a bus, people crossing the road in a heavy traffic movement, three people riding a scooter, domestic animals let loose on the roads and motorbikes on pavements — all these have become a normal scene on the roads of Kathmandu. And these have a lot to do for the poor management of traffic in Kathmandu.

Thus in order to highlight this sorry state of the traffic and bring awareness among the people Metropolitan traffic police division, Durbar Marg organised a special photo exhibition at the Shanti Batika, Ratna Park. A small function attended by traffic police officials, traffic policemen and public was held at the opening of the exhibition on July 18.

Madan Bahadur Khadka, Metropolitan Police Commissioner who was the chief guest of the event said, “These photographs have captured some serious moments which will be vital in bringing awareness. I strongly feel that students must view these photos for they need to be more aware of all these. In spite of the laws, if one doesn’t follow the rules then no one can do anything.”

Also present at the event was Gopal Sundar Kakshapati, MD of Nanglo Private limited who gave a cheque of Rs 25,000 for traffic development. On the subject Kakshapati said, “I don’t think only one person is responsible for this. The government of Nepal is responsible for ignoring the present condition of road and traffic. I think personal initiation will probably be effective in the long-run. Awareness is definitely a big need.” The photos exhibited were sourced from different photographers and newspapers. The exhibition will continue for three more days and is open to all.
